Frequently asked questions
Q: Why should I go to a homeopath instead of my GP?
A: It's not a question of either/or. Homeopathy is something you can use alongside the treatment your GP gives you. Your homeopath will teach you to care for your own and your family's health needs using homeopathy - even in day to day accidents and emergencies.
Q: Are homeopaths qualified in any way?
A: Professional homeopathic training includes a comprehensive 3 - 4 year course in medical sciences, materia medica (homeopathic medicines), homeopathic philosophy, case-taking and rigorous examinations combined with continuing professional education and supervision.
Q: Aren't homeopaths like "faith healers" or people like that?
A: Most people decide to become homeopaths as a result of positive experiences they have had being treated themselves or having members of their families treated using homeopathy. They come from all walks of life – some have dual careers as professionals in Banking, Education, Health, Marketing alongside their practice as homeopaths. Homeopathy is a skill that can be learnt and used in many situations – from caring for the family through to a full on practice.
Q: How do I find a homeopath of good standing?
A: Word of mouth is the best recommendation. However, you can also check the homeopathic professional registers which represent a high standard for practitioners who have to demonstrate their levels of skills, knowledge and expertise in practice before they can be accepted. Homeopaths are obliged to have professional and public liability insurance to be accepted onto the registers. Registers include the Australian Register of Homeopaths (email@example.com) and in the UK The Society of Homeopaths (www.homeopathy-soh.org ).
Q: Why would I pay for two lots of health care?
A: Homeopathic treatment differs from conventional medicine in that it gives the body greater resilience to withstand infections and disease over a period of time and in this way actually reduces the need for medical treatment.
Q: Isn't homeopathic treatment expensive?
A: Like many of the professions, cost is dependent on the level of skills, expert knowledge and length of experience in practice of the practitioner. Fees range from $50 - $150 (AUS) + GST per hour and may or may not include remedies (homeopathic medicine). Some health care providers will cover the costs of "alternative" medicine where practitioners have paid a substantial fee to register with them.
